A cube is a geometric shape which has the sides equal to each other. A cube is a 3-dimensional geometric figure because it has 3-dimensions. Because of the 3-dimensions, a cube has a total of 6 surfaces where each surface is in the shape of a square having equal sides. Area of a cube is calculated by adding up all the surface areas.
Example 1: Find the total surface area of the cube if a side of the cube is 4m.
Given the side length of the cube, s = 4m
Every side in a cube is of equal length, hence all the sides in the cube are equal to= 4m
A cube has a total of 6 surfaces, and area of each surface = (side length) 2
Hence area of 6 surfaces = 6 * (side length) 2
6 * s2 = 6 * (4m)2 = 6 * 16m2 = 96m2
Hence the total surface area of the cube = 96m2
Example 2: Find the total surface area of the cube if the side length of the cube is 6m.
Given the side length of the cube, s = 6m
Every side in a cube is of equal length.
Since it’s a 3-dimensional geometric shape, it has 6 surfaces where every surface is a square of equal sides.
Hence the total surface area of the cube, A = 6 * s2
Total surface area of the cube is 6 * (6m)2 = 216 m2
Hence the total surface area of the cube = 216m2
