Average speed formula is the total distance covered by an object with respect to the total time taken to travel that distance. This implies that if an object covers different distances in different periods of time, then we can sum the total distance and the total time to find the average speed. Average speed is also considered as the average of the speeds with which an object travels different distances in different intervals of time. Average speed is a scalar quantity because it only has magnitude and no direction.

Example 1: A car travels a distance of 20km in a time period of 1hr. The car then travels a distance of 40km in 2hrs. What is the average speed of the car?
Average speed = (total distance)/ (total time taken)

In the given question, the total distance covered by the car, d = 20km + 40km = 60km

Total time taken, t = 1hr + 2hrs = 3hrs

This gives, the average speed = 60km/ 3hrs = 20km/hr

Therefore, the average speed of the given car = 20km/hr.
 

Example 2: An object covers a distance of 5m in the first 3secs, 8m in the next 6secs and then 5m in the next 9secs. What is the average speed of the object?
Average speed = (total distance)/ (total time taken)

In the given question, the total distance covered by the object, d = 5m + 8m + 5m = 18m

Total time taken, t = 3 + 6 + 9 = 18secs

This gives, the average speed = 18m/18secs = 1m/sec

Therefore, the average speed of the given object = 1m/sec.
