A cylinder is a geometric shape consisting of two parallel circular bases. A cylinder has a radius known as “r”,

and height known as “h”. We multiply the radius and height of the cylinder by using the below mentioned

formula to find out its volume i.e. the capacity of the cylinder. The formula to calculate the volume of the

cylinder is as follows:

                                    Volume = πr^2h

The volume of the cylinder can be calculated by following steps:

 Step 1: Calculate the radius of the cylinder

 Step 2: Now, calculate the height of the cylinder

 Step 3: Multiply the radius and height with pie i.e. π so as to calculate the volume of the cylinder with the

help of above formula.

It is important to note that the value of the pie i.e. π is always taken as 3.14 or 22/7


Example 1: Calculate the volume of the cylinder with radius of 6 inches and height of 12 inches.

Solution: Step 1: The radius of the cylinder is 6 inches.

  Step 2: The height of the cylinder is 12 inches.

  Step 3: Substitute the values above in the formula i.e. volume = πr2h

  Therefore, volume of the cylinder = πr^2h = 3.14 x (6)2 x 12

 3.14 x 36 x 12 = 1356.48 in3

 
Example 2: Calculate the volume of cylinder with diameter of 14 inches and height of 15 inches.

Solution: Step 1:- Calculate the radius of the cylinder

 Since, in this question diameter is given, so as to calculate the radius divide the diameter by 2 to find the

radius. Therefore, radius = 14/2 = 7 inches.

 Step 2:- Given the height of the cylinder i.e. 15 inches

 Step 3:- Now Substitute the values calculated above in the formula to calculate the volume

 Volume = πr2h = 3.14 x (7)2 x 15 = 3.14 x 49 x 15

  2307.9 in3
